Someone made one of those and gave to my dad as a joke. My mom had it hidden in her lingerie drawer, not too well, and one of my chores as a kid was putting away laundry. Explanations became necessary!
(My dad’s was red, white, and blue, and had a pompom on the tip.)

Even weirder than what Noelgy said–my grandmother decided to make each of her adult sons one for Christmas one year. Yep! Opened in front of us kids and everything! That day still lives in family infamy.

Sadly, they look like the potholders that go over the handle of a saucepan. Even worse, I’ve seen guys that would need them crocheted with a #16 thread hook to fit.

My boyriend has been pestering me to make him a man thong but I havent found a good pattern yet. If anyone knows of one or a pattern for one of these bad boys I could sure use it.
